MIRANDA HOFFMAN

Sybil and Onyx

Middle Grade Novel in Verse

28,178 word completed manuscript

Imaginative and impulsive twelve-year-old Sybil chafes at the monotony of her everyday life. She’s excited by the rare opportunity to don her crimson cloak and venture into the forbidding forest to tend to her ailing grandmother. On her journey, she finds she is destined for a much more daunting task: she must discover what dark force has wounded the Darach Mor, the ancient oak that nourishes all creation. Surprisingly, Sybil learns she must seek out one of the legendary Laoch Wolves—giant, mythical beasts she has been taught to fear her entire life—to be her protector.

With the help of this magical wolf and her raven guide, Sybil must thwart a calculating wizard’s plan to usurp Faerie power and eliminate all he deems flawed, weak, or useless from the world. Under the wizard’s cruel vision of perfection, Sybil’s elderly grandmother and her little brother would be eliminated, among countless others, simply because of their age or difference. Sybil must find courage and strength she doesn’t know she possesses to save the people she holds dear before they—and the entire world as she knows it—are eradicated.

Miranda Hoffman is a middle grade and young adult author. She grew up in Los Angeles but always thought she should have been born in rural Vermont in the 1890s. As a child, she filled her days with books, drawing, and make-believe time-travel adventures. She went on to study visual art at the LA County High School for the Arts, earned a BA in literature from UC Santa Cruz, and completed an MFA in theater design at the Yale School of Drama. Her early career flourished in New York City, where she designed costumes for productions on and off Broadway and at regional theaters nationwide.

Today, she brings that creative energy to the classroom, teaching middle school Language Arts and Drama. She strives to inspire middle school students to take risks, read deeply, and discover their own voices. She enjoys reading and writing about misfits and outcasts who are driven to transform their worlds and challenge those in power. She is currently working on a young adult dystopian novel. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Miranda enjoys time with her family, yoga, photography, forest walks, and a good podcast. She is a proud member of SCBWI.
